Nizhny Novgorod unveils three new tram routes in major network expansion

Nizhny Novgorod is expanding its tram network with three new routes and major upgrades. Despite delays in previous projects, authorities have now set plans in motion for fresh connections. The city has also modernised over 100 kilometres of existing tracks and added new vehicles to its fleet.

The latest plans include three new tram lines: Myza to Shcherbinki, Olgino to Novinki, and a route serving the 'Oksy Bereg' residential area. Together, these extensions will add 47.8 kilometres of track to the network. Meanwhile, work continues at Depot No. 2 to support the growing system.

Earlier projects in the Sormovo and Prioksky districts faced setbacks, with none of the planned lines completed by 2025. Funding shortages and construction delays stalled progress in those areas. This year, however, the focus shifts to upgrading complex sections, such as the busy intersection at Vaneyev Street.

The city has already reconstructed 105.55 kilometres of tram tracks. Alongside infrastructure improvements, 147 new trams have entered service, boosting capacity and reliability for passengers.

The new routes will extend the network by nearly 50 kilometres, linking more neighbourhoods to the tram system. With ongoing upgrades and a larger fleet, the city aims to improve public transport efficiency. The projects follow earlier delays but now move forward with clearer funding and construction plans.
