Nizhny Novgorod plans major tram network expansion by 2025
Nizhny Novgorod is set to expand its tram network with two new route extensions. The plans, announced by the director of EcoProjects LLC, aim to improve transport links in busy residential areas. Upgrades to tracks, depots, and rolling stock are also underway to support the growing system. The city’s transport authorities are considering two key extensions. One route would reach Sormovo’s 7th Microdistrict, a densely populated area needing better connections. The other proposed line faces hurdles in Novinki, where tight urban development and buried utilities complicate construction.
Meanwhile, the reconstruction of major tram tracks is almost finished. This work will help maintain reliable services as the network grows. Next year, further upgrades will take place, including renovations to the tram depot and traction substations. Passengers will also see new trams in service from 2025. Modernised cars will replace older models, improving capacity and efficiency. The updated fleet, combined with dedicated lanes, should keep trams moving swiftly and avoid traffic delays in congested districts.
The expansion plans will bring trams to underserved neighbourhoods while upgrading existing infrastructure. With new rolling stock and renovated facilities, the system is preparing for increased demand. Officials have yet to confirm final timelines for the Novinki and Sormovo extensions.
