Nissan New Zealand is reshaping its vehicle lineup with several key changes. The company has shelved the Ariya EV and put the all-electric Leaf on indefinite hold. At the same time, it is discontinuing the Pathfinder SUV and Juke crossover, signalling a shift towards electrified models.
The moves follow dealer feedback and policy changes, including the scrapping of the Clean Car Discount by the National government. Meanwhile, a potential new hybrid ute, the Frontier Pro PHEV, may soon enter the market.
The Pathfinder large SUV and Juke compact crossover will no longer be sold in New Zealand. The Pathfinder's discontinuation stems from its US-based production and the lack of a planned hybrid or electric version. The Juke, meanwhile, has reached the end of its market life in the country.
Nissan has also paused plans for the Ariya EV, citing dealer concerns and the removal of government incentives. The all-electric Leaf faces an indefinite delay due to fierce competition in its segment.
Despite these cuts, Nissan is exploring new opportunities. A significant announcement about the ute market is expected within the next two weeks. The Frontier Pro PHEV, developed with Dongfeng, could become a key offering for New Zealand and Australia. This plug-in hybrid ute boasts an electric-only range of up to 135km, an electromechanical rear differential lock, and 6kW vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability.
Globally, Nissan aims to launch nine new energy vehicles in China by 2027. The Frontier Pro is intended for international markets, though production details remain unclear. Zhengzhou Nissan, a likely manufacturer, reported strong new-energy pickup sales—1,535 units in February 2026 and 4,525 in January–February—but no specific data confirms a late-2025 start for the Frontier Pro.
Nissan New Zealand's strategy now focuses on electrified vehicles, phasing out older models. The Frontier Pro PHEV could fill a gap in the ute market if introduced. The company's next steps will depend on market demand and production timelines in China.
