Nigeria's bold data-driven plan to revolutionize its education system

Nigeria has launched a major initiative to transform its education system through data. The Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI) will create a single, reliable source of educational information across the country. Authorities say it will track every learner’s journey from school to the workforce while improving budgeting and policy decisions.

In January 2025, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, set up a 25-member committee to oversee the project’s development.

NEDI is designed to collect, harmonise, and analyse education data on a large scale. The system will cover school profiles, student records, and investments in education delivery. Officials plan to use this databank for evidence-based decision-making and policy reforms.

Dr. Alausa stressed the need for better budgeting at both federal and state levels. He urged state governments, education commissioners, and relevant agencies to support the reform. The minister described the initiative as a key step toward building Nigeria’s knowledge economy. The platform will also monitor improvements in teaching, infrastructure, and learning outcomes. By tracking each student’s progress, NEDI aims to provide clearer insights into the education sector’s strengths and challenges.

NEDI will serve as the main reference for education planning in Nigeria. The system’s data will help officials measure investments, assess school performance, and guide future policies. Implementation will depend on cooperation between federal and state authorities in the coming years.
