Nevada's Comstock District roars back as gold and silver mining resurges under new leases
Uranium American Resources Inc. has expanded its mining operations in Nevada's historic Comstock Mining District. The company now holds leases on properties in the area, focusing on gold and silver extraction. This region was once the heart of a 19th-century silver boom that shaped Nevada's economy and statehood.
The Comstock Mining District, discovered in 1859, became famous for its massive silver output, peaking at $36 million annually in 1878. This wealth helped Nevada achieve statehood in 1864 and turned Virginia City into a bustling mining centre. Though silver production declined after the 1870s, the district remains significant, now contributing 70% of U.S. gold production—around 3.5 million ounces in 2024—alongside other minerals like lithium.
The company's Comstock project sits about 40 kilometres southeast of Reno in northwestern Nevada. It covers three key mineralised structures: the Comstock Lode, a large epithermal gold and silver deposit within a fault system; the Occidental/Brunswick Lode, a parallel system 1.5 kilometres east; and the Silver City Spur, a branch linking the Comstock and Occidental Lodes.
The Comstock Lode itself lies at the eastern base of the Virginia Range, while the Silver City Spur extends southeast, connecting to the southwestern edges of the Occidental Lode. These structures form the backbone of the company's current mining activities in the region.
Uranium American Resources Inc. continues to develop its Comstock project, building on a district with deep historical roots. The area's legacy in silver and its modern role in gold production highlight its enduring importance. The company's leases now cover key mineralised zones, positioning it within one of Nevada's most storied mining regions.
