Neuwied proposes free public transport every Saturday to boost local economy

Hop on, ride, and save—every Saturday. The administration of Neuwied is pushing for completely fare-free public transport on Saturdays and will present the proposal to the city council for approval. Residents would then be able to travel at no cost throughout the entire city area every weekend. Additionally, buses would be free to use on all event days during major gatherings like the Currywurst Festival, Deichstadtfest, and others.

The initiative stems from a motion by the "Alliance for Neuwied" (Bündnis für Neuwied), which was debated and expanded in the city council. Initially, it was decided that buses would not only be free on event days—as successfully trialed during the Knuspermarkt—but also on one Saturday per month. At the same time, the administration was tasked with calculating the additional costs of extending the offer to every Saturday.

The findings: The difference is manageable. "In the end, we're looking at just over €30,000 in extra annual costs, but the benefits are far greater. We're very confident the council will see it the same way," commented Deputy Mayor Ralf Seemann. Since preliminary talks with bus operators have already taken place, the measure could be implemented swiftly after approval—likely as early as May.

The scheme will be funded through parking revenue. For the first time in 14 years, the city recently adjusted parking fees in the downtown area. Though the new rate of €1.20 per hour remains modest compared to other cities, it generates additional income. "We're passing part of that back to residents while also giving them an incentive to leave their cars at home, which helps reduce traffic congestion for local residents," Seemann explained.

Mayor Jan Einig also sees significant potential: "If everyone knows that buses are free on Saturdays, the idea will catch on quickly. It's simple, clear, and practical for everyday life," he said. The goal is to ease pressure on the city center, improve accessibility, and simultaneously boost retail and hospitality. The offer applies citywide—including trips to outlying districts for events like local fairs—he emphasized. So just hop on and go.
