Netherlands Launches NATO's First Dedicated Drone Strategy Amid Rising Threats
The Netherlands has become the first NATO country to roll out a dedicated drone strategy. This move follows lessons from recent conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. The plan includes recruiting up to 1,200 personnel for new drone and counter-drone units across all military branches.
The Dutch Armed Forces will launch a hiring campaign in April to fill these specialised roles. General Onno Eichelsheim anticipates the first 600 recruits will join swiftly. These units will operate within every combat branch, marking a major shift in military structure.
The strategy also demands closer collaboration with industry partners. As drone technology evolves, the military must keep modernising its systems to stay effective. The Dutch **Task Force Drones**, established in April 2025, will support NATO exercises like **REPMUS 2025** in Portugal, where unmanned systems will be tested. Dutch MQ-9 Reaper drones are already active along NATO's eastern flank. Officials stress that this initiative is shaped by real-world experience. Conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East have shown how critical drones are in modern warfare. The Netherlands is now leading NATO's push to integrate these capabilities at scale.
The new units will strengthen the Netherlands' defence and counter-drone abilities. With recruitment starting soon, the military expects rapid progress. The strategy also reinforces NATO's broader efforts to adapt to emerging threats on the battlefield.
