Nashville's Controversial Airport Tunnel Gets Green Light for 2026 Debut

An underground tunnel connecting downtown Nashville to the city's airport is moving forward after state and federal approval. The project, called the Music City Loop, is being built by The Boring Company and promises to cut travel time to just eight minutes. Completion is expected by autumn 2026, despite opposition from local and state officials.

The Boring Company, founded by Elon Musk, is fully funding and constructing the tunnel. The firm has worked on similar projects since 2017, including the 1.7-mile Vegas Loop in Las Vegas, which has carried over 10 million passengers since 2021. Plans there now include 68 miles of tunnels and 69 stations by 2026. However, other projects in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Baltimore have faced delays, cancellations, or legal challenges due to high costs, regulatory hurdles, and lawsuits.

Tennessee's Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration recently approved a lease for the Nashville project on state-owned land. Gov. Bill Lee's administration has called it the 'safest, most efficient travel system in America,' pointing to a 99.57% safety rating from federal agencies for the Vegas Loop. Yet critics, including Nashville City Councilwoman Delishia Porterfield and State Sen. Charlane Oliver, argue the tunnel won't ease daily traffic or serve as fair, widespread public transport.

The company's past work includes a 1.14-mile test tunnel in Hawthorne, California, but larger projects have struggled. In Chicago, plans were scrapped in 2021 over financial and regulatory issues. A West Los Angeles demo stalled in 2021 due to lawsuits and permitting delays, while Baltimore's project remains in planning with no construction started by 2026.

The Music City Loop is set to open by late 2026, offering a fast route between downtown Nashville and the airport. While supporters highlight its speed and safety record, opponents question its impact on traffic and accessibility. The project's success will depend on overcoming the challenges that have delayed other tunnels across the US.
