Municipal energy providers embrace battery storage at record pace

More and more municipal energy providers are turning to battery storage as a key part of their operations. A new survey reveals that four in ten are actively developing such projects. Meanwhile, only a small fraction remain uninterested in the technology. The study found that 11 percent of providers have already started putting battery storage systems in place. Another 27 percent are currently in the planning stages. A further 46 percent are still assessing whether to move forward with storage initiatives.

Of the projects either planned or underway, a third fall within the 1 to 5 megawatt range. Another third are designed for 5 to 10 megawatts, while 23 percent aim for a larger capacity of 10 to 100 megawatts. Only 7 percent of projects exceed 100 megawatts.

Attitudes toward storage vary among providers. While 16 percent show no interest, 35 percent consider battery storage highly or very highly significant to their business. The survey highlights a clear shift toward battery storage among local energy suppliers. With nearly half either planning or already implementing projects, the technology is becoming a central focus. Larger capacities remain less common, but interest continues to grow across the sector.
