Munich's public transport ridership surpasses pre-pandemic levels in 2025
Munich's public transport system has bounced back from pandemic lows, with ridership in 2025 exceeding pre-COVID figures. The city's operator, Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG), recorded a new high of 621 million passengers—surpassing its 2019 total by 6 million. The 2025 figures mark the first time since the pandemic that ridership has climbed above 2019 levels. Overall growth was modest, with a 1% increase compared to 2024.
Trams saw the strongest performance, reaching a record 127 million passengers. Buses also neared pre-pandemic numbers, carrying 220 million riders. However, the subway system experienced a slight decline, with 442 million journeys—down from previous years. Despite the dip in underground travel, the combined results show a transport network regaining stability. MVG's figures do not include data on how these changes affect other regional providers.
The 2025 numbers confirm a steady recovery for Munich's public transport. Trams and buses drove most of the growth, while the subway system lagged slightly. The city's network now operates at levels higher than before the pandemic.
