Munich rail chaos: Major disruptions hit key train routes in June

Germany’s rail network is facing major disruptions in early June due to construction and maintenance work. Travellers in Munich and surrounding areas will see significant changes to services, including cancellations and replacement buses on key routes. From June 1 to 15, the Werdenfels line between Munich and Garmisch-Partenkirchen will operate with partial suspensions. During the first week, only the S8 will run on weekdays, while in the second week, just the S6 will remain in service. On weekends, both the S8 and S6 lines will be completely suspended.

The Stammstrecke, Munich’s central core route, will also face interruptions from June 12–15. Only the S1, S2, S3, and S5 will maintain their usual routes, though with some delays. The S2 will provide replacement services between Ostbahnhof and Markt Schwaben, but all trains between Trudering and Ostbahnhof will be cancelled. Replacement buses will cover routes between Pasing and Harthaus, as well as between Pasing and Gauting on the Werdenfels line. The following weekend (June 20–21), only the S2 and S8 will run normally on the Stammstrecke, while the S1 will terminate at Hauptbahnhof.

Passengers are being urged to check their connections via Deutsche Bahn’s online timetable before travelling. The disruptions will affect both weekday and weekend services, with alternative transport arranged where possible. Delays and cancellations are expected throughout the maintenance period.
