Mumbai’s drug trafficking networks are evolving into highly organised, tech-driven operations. Gone are the old gang structures—today’s syndicates rely on compartmentalised layers, encrypted communications, and a 'need-to-know' approach to avoid detection.
The shift in Mumbai’s drug trade has seen traditional hierarchies replaced by fragmented, multi-layered networks. Operatives now work under a 'cut-to-cut' system, where delivery points constantly change, fake documents and SIM cards are standard, and recruits know only their immediate contacts. Many syndicates adopt a 'No Face-No Name' model, ensuring suppliers, couriers, and peddlers never learn each other’s identities.
Arrests no longer disrupt operations as easily as before. Modern syndicates use replacement systems, quickly activating new recruits to fill gaps left by detained members. Transactions avoid direct communication, instead relying on coded signals—clothing colours, bag types, or vehicle descriptions—to coordinate exchanges. The city’s vulnerabilities—its dense population, bustling nightlife, corporate hubs, and youth culture—make it a prime target. Networks are often controlled remotely from Dubai, Canada, South Africa, or Southeast Asia, using encrypted platforms and fake digital profiles. Drugs move through local trains, cabs, delivery services, and crowded public spaces, with small quantities distributed to minimise risk. Retired additional DGP PK Jain has proposed countermeasures. He recommends dismantling financial networks, boosting cyber and financial tracking, and investing in youth awareness and rehabilitation programmes.
Mumbai’s drug trade now operates with greater secrecy and adaptability. The reliance on encrypted tech, fake identities, and decentralised structures makes detection harder. Authorities face the challenge of disrupting networks that no longer depend on visible leaders or predictable patterns.
