Mumbai Police dismantle ONGC offshore theft ring in Arabian Sea

Mumbai Police have cracked down on a series of thefts targeting ONGC’s offshore installations in the Arabian Sea. The Yellow Gate Police have arrested 11 people and registered cases against 37 boats caught in restricted zones near the platforms. An organised group of fishermen allegedly carried out the thefts using GPS-equipped boats. They targeted unmanned ONGC platforms 42 nautical miles off Mumbai, stealing batteries, cables, solar panels, and other equipment. The stolen goods were hidden under fish in boat compartments and sold as scrap after being smuggled ashore via specific routes.

Over six months, police registered five theft cases, solving four of them. They also launched preventive action against 38 individuals and boat owners linked to the crimes. Authorities have requested the Maharashtra Fisheries Department to revoke the licences of the offending vessels.

Officials credit the decline in thefts to constant surveillance, better coordination with maritime agencies, and awareness drives. Meetings were held with fishermen, boat owners, crew members, and marine security volunteers to deter further offences. The crackdown has led to arrests, licence cancellations, and stricter monitoring of the 500-metre security zone around ONGC platforms. Police continue to work with local communities and agencies to prevent future thefts.
