Mumbai faces another CNG and PNG price hike amid global energy surge
Fuel costs in Mumbai and surrounding areas have risen again as global energy prices remain high. Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has increased the price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) by Rs. 2 per kg, bringing it to Rs. 86 per kg. This marks the second hike in May, following a previous rise on the 14th of the month.
The latest price adjustments will affect both transport and household budgets. Alongside the CNG increase, MGL has also raised the cost of piped natural gas (PNG) by 50 paise per unit for domestic cooking. These revised rates now apply in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and other nearby locations served by the company.
Despite the price hikes, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has confirmed that supplies of crude oil, petrol, and diesel remain stable nationwide. Meanwhile, the Centre has instructed public sector fuel retailers to maintain LPG inventories equal to at least 30 days of domestic demand. This move aims to ensure sufficient stockpiles amid fluctuating global energy markets. State-run oil companies are currently absorbing daily losses of around Rs. 550 crore on petrol, diesel, and LPG sales. The full impact of rising global fuel prices has not yet been passed on to consumers. In Mumbai, petrol was priced at Rs. 111.21 per litre on Saturday, while diesel cost Rs. 97.83 per litre.
The latest increases in CNG and PNG prices will push up transport and household costs across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. With global energy prices still elevated, further adjustments to fuel rates cannot be ruled out. Consumers and businesses in the area will need to account for these higher expenses in their budgets.
