Mumbai Caregiver Accused of Brutally Assaulting 75-Year-Old Resident in Shocking Video

A caretaker at a Mumbai senior care facility has been accused of assaulting a 75-year-old resident after tying her to a bed. The incident, which took place in March 2023, came to light when a video of the attack spread on social media, prompting public outrage. Police have now registered a formal case against the staff member involved.

The assault occurred on March 11, 2023, at a senior care foundation in Gorai-2, Borivali. The victim, identified as Vaishali A, had been living at the facility for five months. According to reports, caretaker Surekha Pawar allegedly struck the elderly woman with a broom after becoming frustrated with her repeated requests to use the washroom.

The victim did not report the incident immediately, fearing further harm after Pawar threatened her. She later shared details with others, who then informed the authorities. A video of the assault, recorded by another resident, was widely circulated online, drawing attention to the case.

Mumbai Police registered an FIR against Pawar under charges of voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous means. Officers detained her for questioning and issued a notice requiring her cooperation with the investigation. Authorities are also reviewing supervision practices at the care facility to determine whether lapses contributed to the incident.

The case has raised concerns about the safety and treatment of elderly residents in care homes. While exact figures for similar incidents in Mumbai remain unclear, national data suggests between 50 and 100 cases of elder abuse or neglect occur annually across India. Investigations into the facility's protocols and Pawar's actions are ongoing.
