Motorcyclist's life shattered after ambulance hit-and-run sparks medical nightmare

José Enrique Mendoza Bautista was hit by an ambulance while riding his motorcycle along Federal Highway 190 near Tlacolula de Matamoros. The crash on February 19, 2025, left him with severe leg injuries and triggered a series of medical complications. His recovery has since been marred by alleged negligence and repeated surgeries. The accident caused an open fracture in José’s left tibia and fibula. He was first taken to a private clinic, where doctors operated on February 27, 2025. Three months later, an infection developed in his leg, forcing him to buy voluntary IMSS insurance for further care.

Doctors at Oaxaca’s Regional General Hospital No. 1 removed a metal plate from his leg and performed surgical debridement on July 25, 2025. Despite his requests, José was never transferred to a higher-level facility. Instead, another surgery at the same hospital led to his skin splitting and a reinfection.

The repeated procedures have weakened the skin on his leg. Excessive antibiotic use has also harmed his kidneys and liver, now requiring dialysis. José has repeatedly asked for a transfer to a third-level IMSS hospital in Puebla or Mexico City but claims doctors have refused.

The ambulance that struck José reportedly fled the scene without activating its lights or siren. José’s injuries from the February 2025 crash have led to ongoing health struggles. His case involves multiple surgeries, infections, and alleged delays in proper treatment. The long-term effects of his injuries and medical care remain unresolved.
