Michoacán debuts its first cable car system in Uruapan
Michoacán has launched its first cable car system in Uruapan, marking a major step in the state’s public transport upgrades. The project, costing nearly 3 billion pesos, was officially opened on April 18 and is expected to serve 46,000 passengers daily once fully operational. The Uruapan cable car is currently 68% complete, with the first four of seven planned stations set to open in September. This initial phase will allow passengers to travel from north to south in just 15 minutes. The remaining stations and final works are scheduled for completion between December 2026 and January 2027.
Meanwhile, Morelia is preparing for its own cable car system, which will begin operations on September 30, 2023. Together, these two networks will form Michoacán’s first aerial transit systems, both funded entirely by state resources. In addition to the cable cars, work on the Morebús transit system will start on May 12. The first phase of this project requires an investment of 2.9 billion pesos, further expanding the state’s transport infrastructure.
The Uruapan cable car, with a total investment of 3.2 billion pesos, aims to improve daily commutes for thousands. Once fully operational, it will connect key areas of the city in minutes. The project is part of a broader effort to modernise transport across Michoacán.
