Michigan's roads improve but bridges and funding gaps remain critical
Michigan's road and bridge network has seen both progress and persistent challenges, according to the latest findings from the Reason Foundation's 29th Annual Highway Report. The state now ranks 23rd overall—an improvement from 34th in 2020—but continues to struggle with bridge conditions and funding for key repairs. While some areas, like traffic congestion and rural safety, have shown gains, others remain a cause for concern.
The report highlights Michigan's mixed performance across different categories. In traffic congestion, the state now ranks 15th, with drivers losing roughly 15 hours a year to delays. Rural fatality rates have also improved, placing Michigan 7th in that category, though urban fatality rates sit at 22nd.
Pavement conditions vary widely. Rural arterial roads rank a respectable 16th, but urban arterials fall to 34th. The state's interstate highways fare worse, with rural stretches at 39th and urban sections at 41st in pavement quality. The most pressing issue remains Michigan's bridges. The state ranks 43rd for structurally deficient bridges, with 1,248 newly identified as needing repair since 2020, based on early 2026 data from the Michigan Department of Transportation. Funding has also taken a hit, particularly in capital and bridge disbursements, where the state dropped to 39th. Maintenance spending, however, holds at 19th.
Michigan's overall ranking has climbed from 34th to 23rd since 2020, reflecting progress in areas like congestion and rural safety. Yet the state still faces significant hurdles, particularly with bridge repairs and funding shortfalls. With over 1,200 bridges now flagged as structurally deficient, addressing these issues will be critical in the years ahead.
