MGEN's Toledo Battery Storage System Powers Up Cebu's Energy Future

The MGEN Toledo Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) officially went live on May 8, 2026, in Cebu, Visayas. This launch marks a key step toward a more stable and sustainable energy network in the region, reinforcing MGEN’s dedication to modernising the grid. The newly energised Toledo BESS is the first facility of its kind in the Visayas capable of delivering a continuous rated output for two hours before needing a recharge. Its Phase 1 operations provide 25 megawatts of power and 56.44 megawatt-hours of storage, using advanced lithium-ion technology.

The system stores electricity from both renewable and conventional sources, purchased through the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market. It will help balance supply during peak and off-peak periods, ensuring steady power delivery and strengthening grid resilience. MGEN officials stressed the importance of closer public-private partnerships to boost energy security and speed up the shift to renewables. The project aligns with Department of Energy regulations, which mandate that variable renewable energy plants with at least 10-megawatt capacity must include storage solutions for grid stability. Cebu, a major demand hub in the Visayas, plays a central role in MGEN’s energy portfolio. The Toledo BESS is expected to support the region’s growing needs while advancing the broader transition to cleaner energy.

The Toledo BESS will enhance the Visayas grid by smoothing out power fluctuations and improving reliability. Its operation also meets regulatory requirements for renewable integration, setting a precedent for future energy storage projects in the region.
