Mexico's SIPINNA warns school calendar changes must prioritize students' rights
Mexico’s National System for the Integral Protection of Children and Adolescents (SIPINNA) has responded to President Claudia Sheinbaum’s plan to review the Education Ministry’s (SEP) proposed school calendar. The organisation stressed that any changes must put students’ rights and well-being first.
SIPINNA also called for stronger coordination between government agencies to support families if the calendar is altered. SIPINNA began by recognising Sheinbaum’s decision to examine the SEP’s school calendar proposal. The body argued that any adjustments should be assessed through a rights-based approach, ensuring students’ needs remain central.
The organisation then warned that modifications to the academic schedule must account for key factors. These include education quality, childcare, safety, and the overall protection of children and teenagers. Without careful planning, SIPINNA suggested, students could face unnecessary disruptions.
To prepare for potential changes, SIPINNA emphasised the need for interagency collaboration. It also urged authorities to implement support measures for families, helping them adapt to any new timetable. Preventive actions, the group noted, would be crucial in reducing negative regional impacts. SIPINNA’s statements highlight the importance of thorough evaluation before altering the school calendar. The organisation’s warnings focus on safeguarding students’ education, safety, and rights.
If changes proceed, coordinated efforts and family support will be essential to minimise disruption across Mexico.
