Mexico's first free school transport system launches in San Pedro Garza García

San Pedro Garza García has launched Mexico’s first free public school transport system to tackle urban traffic problems. The San Pedro School Circuit aims to cut congestion near schools while offering families a safer, more affordable travel option. Currently, the service supports around 300 students from six local institutions.

The programme began as a pilot under Mayor Mauricio Farah Giacomán, with General Secretary Luis Susarrey overseeing its rollout. Buses are fitted with security cameras and enhanced safety measures to protect students during journeys.

Funding follows a cost-sharing approach: the municipality covers part of the expenses, while private schools contribute another portion. Families at these schools will pay roughly 1,000 pesos monthly—a fraction of the cost of private transport alternatives. During the full implementation phase, each school will have two dedicated buses, and new routes will extend the service to additional institutions. The system’s long-term goal is to reduce school-related traffic and provide a reliable, organised transport network for students.

The San Pedro School Circuit marks a shift in how local governments address urban mobility challenges. With lower costs for families and improved safety standards, the initiative is set to expand across more schools. Officials will monitor its impact on traffic and student commutes in the coming months.
