Mexico's electric vehicle shift accelerates—but diesel still dominates fleets
Mexico’s shift to electric vehicles is gaining momentum, but challenges remain. While some companies have begun testing electric fleets, most still rely on traditional fuels. The transition is expected to take at least another decade, with both technologies operating side by side for years to come. Last-mile delivery firms are leading the early adoption of electric vehicles in Mexico. One of the country’s largest bread distributors has already switched 10% of its fleet to electric, making it the most advanced in this transition. Yet no company currently operates a fully electric fleet—even logistics businesses still depend on a mix of diesel, petrol, and electric vehicles.
Charging infrastructure remains a major hurdle. By 2025, Mexico had only 4,060 public charging stations, compared to 52,666 private charging points. This shortage slows wider adoption, as businesses and drivers need reliable access to charging. Chinese automakers have entered Mexico’s commercial electric vehicle market. However, their presence is limited by weak after-sales service and maintenance networks. This gap makes some companies hesitant to fully commit to electric fleets. Data from Edenred Mexico highlights the slow pace of change. Of the 500,000 vehicles managed by the company, 97% still run on petrol or diesel. Just 3% are electric, showing how far the transition has left to go.
The move away from diesel and petrol will be gradual, with both fuel types and electric vehicles sharing the road for the next 10 to 15 years. While early adopters test efficiency gains, infrastructure and service gaps must be addressed before a full shift becomes possible. For now, hybrid fleets remain the most practical solution for most businesses.
