Mexico's 2026 auto market races toward record sales despite production dip
Mexico’s automotive market is set for a strong year in 2026. The Mexican Association of Automobile Dealers (AMDA) predicts record-breaking sales, with new car purchases expected to climb by 3% compared to 2025. Low prices, fierce competition, and easy credit are fuelling demand among buyers. The first five months of 2026 have already shown growth, with sales rising by over 5%. AMDA forecasts total new car sales will reach 1,677,337 units by the end of the year. Consumers are increasingly choosing longer loan terms, such as 60- and 72-month financing plans, to afford their purchases.
While sales are thriving, production has faced challenges. Auto manufacturing dropped by 3.7% in May, with factories producing 342,926 vehicles. Despite this dip, exports have remained strong. Vehicle shipments abroad grew by 1.7% in May, totalling 306,288 units. Exports to Canada saw an even sharper rise, jumping by 29% during the same period.
The 2026 outlook for Mexico’s car market remains positive, with sales on track to hit a new high. Strong credit options and competitive pricing continue to attract buyers. Meanwhile, exports are rising, even as domestic production faces a slight decline.
