Mexico City tightens rules for electric bikes and scooters with steep fines

Mexico City has updated its traffic rules for electric bikes and scooters. Riders now face stricter penalties, including fines of over 2,340 pesos for violations. The new regulations also introduce clearer classifications for these vehicles. The city’s Traffic Regulations now split electric bikes and scooters into two groups: personal electric vehicles (PEVs) and motorised personal electric vehicles (MPEVs). PEVs have motors limited to 25 km/h, while MPEVs exceed this speed.

MPEVs must display license plates, registration stickers, and an electric mobility identifier. Riders and passengers of these vehicles are required to wear helmets. Additionally, MPEVs can only carry the number of passengers listed on their registration.

The rules ban MPEVs from sidewalks, bike lanes, and public transport lanes. Fines for violations range from 10 to 20 times the current UMA value. Offenders will also lose three points from their driver’s licence. The updated regulations aim to improve safety and order on Mexico City’s roads. Riders of electric bikes and scooters must now follow stricter rules or risk financial penalties and licence deductions. The changes apply immediately under the revised Traffic Regulations.
