Mexican woman avoids trial after allegedly trapping cat in a sack
A woman in León, Guanajuato, has been granted conditional suspension of proceedings for allegedly stuffing a cat into a tied sack. The case centres on accusations of animal cruelty and endangering the life of a sentient being. Local animal welfare group Gaticos de León A.C. has been actively involved in the fight against such abuse. The incident occurred when the woman trapped the cat in a sack and left it on the street. Animal welfare activists later rescued the kitten. Formal charges were filed against her on April 16, 2026.
A hearing took place on June 12, 2026, where the judge approved the conditional suspension. The defendant must now pay restitution for the kitten’s veterinary care and complete community service supporting animal welfare. Under Mexico’s National Code of Criminal Procedure, the case can be closed without trial if she fulfils these conditions and adheres to a restorative plan.
If she fails to meet the terms, the suspension may be revoked. This would restart the criminal proceedings against her. The ruling allows the case to be temporarily halted while the defendant fulfils the set conditions. Gaticos de León A.C. continues its work in protecting animals and combating abuse. The outcome depends on the woman’s compliance with the court’s requirements.
