Mexican Senate erupts in chaos over cartel accusations and political feuds

A heated debate erupted in Mexico’s Senate as lawmakers from PAN, PRI, and Morena clashed over historical grievances and current security issues. Laura Itzel Castillo Juárez, Senate president, accused past administrations of enabling drug cartels and colluding with criminal groups. The session quickly descended into chaos. Andrea Navarro and Lilly Téllez exchanged sharp words, disrupting proceedings. Carolina Viggiano later acknowledged Mexico’s ongoing battle with organised crime but criticised the government for failing to curb its growth.

Castillo Juárez blamed the 'PRIAN' regime for the damage caused by neoliberal policies. She also claimed drug cartels emerged under PRI and PAN rule, not during Morena’s tenure. Additionally, she accused the PAN government and former president Felipe Calderón of working with the Sinaloa Cartel during the war on drugs.

Kenia López Rabadán, president of the Chamber of Deputies, called on Castillo Juárez to fulfil her duties with dignity. She urged the Senate leader to respect the rights of all legislators. Castillo Juárez responded by demanding a coordinator for the parliamentary group and emphasised the need for self-respect. The debate highlighted deep divisions among lawmakers over Mexico’s past and present struggles. Discussions also touched on the 'Halconazo' massacre and Coahuila’s elections. Tensions remain high as political factions continue to clash over accountability and governance.
