A woman in Mexicali, Mexico, is facing serious charges after her three-year-old son died from heatstroke. Roxana N. allegedly left the child locked inside a car overnight during a summer heatwave. Authorities have now confirmed they will pursue a prison sentence of up to 15 years.
The incident took place in Mexicali, a city known for extreme summer temperatures. On the night in question, readings fluctuated between 86°F and 93°F (30°C and 34°C). The child was found dead inside the vehicle the following morning.
An autopsy revealed first-degree burns on the boy’s arms and thighs. Investigators determined the cause of death was heatstroke, linked to prolonged exposure in the locked car. Baja California Attorney General María Elena Andrade Ramírez announced the charges against Roxana N. Prosecutors have classified the case as improper omission homicide with eventual intent. If convicted, the mother could receive a sentence ranging from eight to 15 years in prison.
Mexicali has been one of Mexico’s worst-affected regions for heatstroke deaths during recent heatwaves. The case now moves through the legal system, with prosecutors seeking a lengthy prison term. The child’s death has drawn renewed attention to the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles during high temperatures.
