Memorial Day travel chaos expected as 45 million hit the road despite high fuel costs

A record 45 million people are expected to travel during the Memorial Day weekend. Despite soaring fuel costs, most will hit the road rather than fly. Congestion and delays are likely as drivers face some of the busiest travel days of the year so far. AAA forecasts that 87% of holiday travellers will drive to their destinations. Only 8% plan to fly, even though U.S. airlines anticipate carrying 263 million passengers over the summer months. The preference for road trips remains strong despite high fuel prices.

The national average for regular unleaded petrol sits at around $4.56 per gallon. California tops the list with the highest costs at $6.11 per gallon, followed by Hawaii at $5.62. Texas offers the cheapest prices, with drivers paying about $3.92 per gallon. Heavy traffic is predicted for Friday between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Congestion will peak again on Monday afternoon, with some routes experiencing more than double the usual delays. Authorities have advised travellers to plan extra time for their journeys.

The holiday weekend will see millions on the move, with roads far busier than skies. Fuel prices remain a concern, but most travellers still choose driving over flying. Delays are inevitable, particularly during peak travel windows on Friday and Monday.
