A large fire broke out at Kalachinsk’s municipal landfill late on May 1, 2026. Emergency crews were called to the scene immediately after flames were spotted at 9:30 PM. Authorities have since worked non-stop to bring the situation under control. The blaze was first reported by local residents, prompting an instant response from fire services. Heavy machinery, including up to 12 units, was quickly deployed to tackle the flames. Due to the nature of landfill fires, extinguishing efforts focused on covering burning layers with soil while using water to suppress visible flames on the surface.

On May 4, Friedrich Metzler, the head of Kalachinsk, addressed the incident publicly for the first time. He confirmed that a dedicated task force had been operating around the clock since the fire began. Despite the scale of the operation, no residential areas were ever at risk, as the fire remained contained within the landfill boundaries.

By the following days, all open flames had been put out, and the fire had not spread beyond the original site. Officials announced that the blaze would be declared fully extinguished only after 48 hours of continuous monitoring to ensure no hotspots remained. The landfill fire, though challenging, was contained without threatening nearby homes. Crews used soil coverage and water suppression to gradually eliminate the flames. Once the 48-hour observation period concludes, authorities will confirm the fire’s complete extinguishment.
