New industrial site near Tesla planned - Dispute over forest - Massive 240-Hectare Industrial Hub Sparks Deforestation Fears in Brandenburg
Fürstenwalde/Spree in eastern Brandenburg is planning a vast commercial and industrial hub covering 240 hectares—roughly the same size as Tesla's Gigafactory in Grünheide. While officials describe it as a future economic boost, the proposal has already faced strong opposition from local environmental groups and residents.
The town's feasibility study outlines a development zone for the potential industrial site. However, any actual construction is not expected for at least three to five years. Officials claim that preparing these zones in advance will let Brandenburg's economic development agency quickly attract investors when opportunities arise.
Critics, including the citizen group Walderhalt Spreetal, argue that the project threatens around 430 hectares of forest in the Oder-Spree region. They warn that about 300 hectares of ecologically sensitive land—spanning Fürstenwalde-Ost and Langewahl—could be lost, comparable to the deforestation seen for Tesla's Grünheide plant. The group has accused the town of pushing forward with little transparency or public consultation.
Local residents have also raised concerns about large-scale deforestation. Protests have begun, with opponents labeling the plans an 'XXL industrial zone' that would stretch across two municipalities.
The proposed industrial hub remains in its early stages, with no immediate construction planned. If approved, it would reshape the region's landscape and economy. For now, debates over environmental impact and public involvement continue to grow.
