Masdar and TotalEnergies Launch $2.2B Asia Renewable Energy Venture

Masdar and TotalEnergies have agreed to a $2.2 billion joint venture targeting Asia's renewable energy market. The new platform will consolidate their operations across nine countries, aiming to expand clean energy capacity in a region with rising electricity demand.

The partnership will be headquartered in Abu Dhabi Global Market, serving as the sole vehicle for both companies to develop, own, and operate projects in the region. The venture begins with a combined portfolio of 3 GW in operational capacity and another 6 GW in advanced development. These projects are expected to come online by 2030, though no additional capacity targets beyond the existing pipeline have been announced.

Both companies will contribute assets of comparable value, ensuring a balanced foundation and reducing execution risks across multiple markets. Once regulatory approvals are secured, a management team will be appointed to oversee operations.

Asia remains a key focus due to its fast-growing electricity demand, which is projected to drive global energy expansion. The joint venture will employ around 200 staff, drawn from Masdar and TotalEnergies, reinforcing Abu Dhabi's role as a hub for energy investment.

Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Masdar's managing director, highlighted the partnership as part of the UAE's strategy to deliver large-scale energy solutions. Patrick Pouyanné, TotalEnergies' chairman and CEO, added that the deal strengthens their competitive position in high-growth markets while deepening collaboration between the two firms. The joint venture will operate across Azerbaijan, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, and Uzbekistan. With a starting capacity of 9 GW by 2030, the platform aims to capitalise on Asia's increasing energy needs. Finalisation of the deal remains subject to regulatory approvals.
