Mainz braces for months of traffic chaos amid major construction projects

Mainz is preparing for a busy summer and autumn of major construction projects. Residents will face months of disruptions as roadworks, tram closures, and infrastructure upgrades get underway. The city’s mobility commissioner has outlined the key areas affected in the coming months. Binger Straße, which has been partially closed for nearly two years, will finally reopen to two-way traffic between June 29 and July 5. This marks the end of a long period of restrictions for drivers in the area.

The tram line to Hechtsheim will shut down for renovation during the summer holidays. Passengers will rely on replacement bus services until 2027, as the work extends over several years. Meanwhile, the Schneckenburger Areal and Universitätsmedizin in Oberstadt will connect to the district heating grid this summer, improving local energy supply. In autumn, Pariser Straße (B40) in Bretzenheim will close completely for bridge resurfacing near Haifa-Allee and Albert-Stohr-Straße. The Old Town will also see heavy construction later in the year, including cable repairs and further district heating expansion. Nearby, Umbachstraße and Holzhofstraße will switch to one-way traffic due to ongoing heating network upgrades. Toward the end of 2024, demolition of the Hochbrücke bridge will begin, leading to repeated full closures until 2029. This long-term project will add to the growing list of roadworks across the city.

The number of construction sites in Mainz will keep rising, with multiple projects overlapping during the summer and autumn. Drivers, tram users, and pedestrians will need to plan for delays, while the city works to upgrade its infrastructure over the next few years.
