PBBM: High-standard Maharlika Highway rehab key to regional growth

Maharlika Highway's PHP16B upgrade to slash travel time by half

The Maharlika Highway, the Philippines’ longest road network, is undergoing a major PHP16 billion rehabilitation. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. recently inspected ongoing works in Pinabacdao, Samar, and urged contractors to maintain high construction standards throughout the project. The upgrade aims to cut travel time between Tacloban City and Catbalogan City from three hours to just one hour and 45 minutes. Faster connections will help farmers and entrepreneurs by lowering transport costs and improving logistics for goods.

Beyond economic benefits, the project will also improve access to essential services. Residents will find it easier to reach hospitals, schools, and markets once the highway is complete. The government expects the works to finish by August this year. Marcos highlighted the project’s role in disaster response as well. A well-maintained highway will allow quicker and more reliable relief operations during emergencies. The rehabilitation aligns with broader goals of boosting regional growth through better mobility and connectivity.

Once completed, the upgraded Maharlika Highway will serve as a key route for both daily travel and emergency response. The PHP16 billion investment is set to deliver faster journeys, stronger logistics, and improved access to services across the region. Construction remains on track for an August finish date.
