Maharashtra approves ₹31,793 crore Virar-Alibaug transport corridor to ease MMR traffic

The Maharashtra government has given the green light to Phase 1 of the Virar-Alibaug Multi-Modal Transport Corridor. This Rs 31,793 crore project aims to boost connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Officials describe it as a major step in easing traffic and cutting travel times between the area’s northern and southern districts. The approved first phase will span 96.41 km, linking Navghar in Vasai to Balavali in Pen. Eventually, the corridor could stretch nearly 128 km, forming a key transport artery. It will feature a 14-lane, access-controlled expressway designed to reduce congestion and improve regional links.

The route will pass through 104 villages across eight talukas in Palghar, Thane, and Raigad. Once complete, it will connect critical hubs like Jawaharlal Nehru Port, the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link. The project will follow a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, with private partners handling construction and operations. Land acquisition and detailed planning are set to begin shortly after the state’s approval. Authorities expect the corridor to play a vital role in supporting economic growth and streamlining transport across the MMR.

With the first phase now approved, work on the Virar-Alibaug corridor can move forward. The expressway is projected to slash travel times and enhance access to major infrastructure projects. Construction and operational details will be finalised as planning progresses.
