Maharashtra approves ₹22,611 crore transport overhaul for Mumbai region

The Maharashtra government has greenlit major transport projects worth ₹22,611 crore for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). These include a new metro extension, an underground tunnel, and an elevated corridor designed to cut travel times and reduce congestion.

The approvals cover both road and metro upgrades, aiming to connect key areas like Navi Mumbai and Bhayandar more efficiently. A key part of the plan is the expansion of Navi Mumbai Metro Lines 1A and 2, costing ₹5,575 crore. The extended network will add 13 new stations and create a 28-km corridor linking Sagar Sangam to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport Terminal-4.

The Cabinet also approved two major road projects worth ₹17,036 crore. One is a 5.86-km underground tunnel between Gaimukh and Fountain Hotel on Ghodbunder Road. Built using Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) technology, the 14-metre-diameter tunnel is expected to take five years to complete.

The second road project is a 9.58-km elevated corridor running parallel to Vasai Creek. This six-lane route will connect Fountain Hotel to Bhayandar and allow speeds of up to 100 kmph. Both projects will be developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with funding support from the central and state governments.

The road upgrades aim to ease heavy traffic on Ghodbunder Road, while the metro expansion will improve connectivity across Navi Mumbai. Together, these projects form a major push to modernise the region’s transport network. The combined ₹22,611 crore investment will fund faster metro links and new high-speed roads. Once completed, the projects are set to reduce travel delays and boost connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Construction will proceed under a mix of government and private sector funding.
