Magadan Oblast faces land management crisis as farmland lies abandoned

Authorities have raised concerns over poor land management in Magadan Oblast. A recent review found that several districts failed to properly oversee agricultural land. The issues include unused farmland and widespread overgrowth with weeds. On April 17, 2026, Rosselkhoznadzor met with local officials to assess land control efforts in the region. The meeting revealed that most districts had not taken adequate preventive steps. Only Yagodninsky and Khasynsky districts carried out necessary measures.

By April 30, 2026, the agency had received four official reports highlighting deficiencies in municipal oversight. Tenkinsky, Omsukchansky, and Srednekansky districts were specifically criticised for neglecting their responsibilities. The Severo-Evensky district was also flagged for not adopting required land control regulations.

Inspections uncovered 44 overgrown plots, covering more than 6,500 hectares. The most frequent violation was the failure to use farmland for its intended purpose. Magadan Oblast holds a total of 303,400 hectares of agricultural land, making proper oversight essential. The findings point to significant gaps in land management across multiple districts. Over 6,500 hectares now lie overrun with weeds due to insufficient control. Authorities have called for stricter enforcement and better compliance with regulations.
