Extreme Heat Pushes Power Demand To All-Time High Across Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh's power grid strains under record 45°C heatwave

Madhya Pradesh is facing record-breaking power demand as temperatures soar between 42°C and 45°C. On May 19, 2023, the state’s electricity consumption peaked at 15,038 MW—the highest of the season. Residents are relying heavily on air conditioners, coolers, and fans to stay cool during the extreme heatwave. The state’s usual power demand hovers around 12,000 MW. However, this May, consumption has surged to between 14,000 MW and 15,000 MW. On Friday, May 19, demand reached 14,700 MW before climbing further to the season’s peak later that afternoon.

Last year, timely rainfall in May helped lower temperatures and reduced electricity usage. But the current heatwave has driven consumption to unprecedented levels. Adding to the strain, some power plants are struggling with production issues. Unit 4 of the Sanjay Gandhi power plant and a 660 MW unit at the Shri Singaji Thermal Power Project are among those affected. With no immediate relief from the heat, the state’s power grid remains under pressure. Officials are monitoring the situation closely as demand continues to rise.

The extreme heat has pushed Madhya Pradesh’s electricity consumption to new highs. Power plants are facing challenges, and demand shows no signs of easing soon. Authorities will need to manage resources carefully as the state endures the ongoing heatwave.
