Macron's €10B Nuclear Aircraft Carrier Signals France's Military Ambition

President Emmanuel Macron has outlined an ambitious plan to strengthen France's military power. Speaking recently, he declared that the country must be 'feared' and 'powerful' to protect its freedom. His strategy includes a €10 billion investment in a next-generation aircraft carrier and a push for rapid industrial and technological growth.

Macron announced the construction of a new nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, set to be 310 metres long and weigh 80,000 tons. The vessel will feature two nuclear reactors and three catapult tracks—an upgrade from the current two—allowing it to launch and recover up to 40 aircraft simultaneously. This design will give France a rare operational edge, as only the US and France currently operate nuclear-powered carriers.

The president also stressed the need for 'mass production at greater speed' to counter rising global instability. His plan includes an extra €36 billion for the armed forces by 2030, with €3.5 billion allocated this year and €3 billion next. These funds will support industrial, technological, and military innovation, which Macron called vital for France's independence.

Since his March 2026 announcement to expand France's nuclear arsenal, no major progress has been made in military cooperation with eight European partners, including Germany and Belgium. Instead, Macron has proposed extending France's nuclear deterrence over Europe while boosting collaboration in conventional weapons, space, and air surveillance.

He framed these moves as part of a broader French spirit of resistance and determination to stay free in an increasingly unstable world.

The new aircraft carrier and increased defence spending mark a major shift in France's military strategy. With these investments, the country aims to secure its position as a leading global power. The focus now turns to how quickly these plans can be executed and whether European partners will align with Macron's vision.
