Macau is planning its first major expansion of the Light Rapid Transit (LRT) system since its launch in 2019. The move comes as the city faces growing demand, with daily ridership reaching 26,400 passengers in 2025. Officials now aim to improve transport links at key entry points and reduce reliance on buses and shuttles.

The current LRT network operates three lines: the Taipa Line, Seac Pai Van Line, and Hengqin Line. But with visitor numbers hitting a record 40 million in 2025—a 15% rise from the previous year—authorities are pushing for further development. The East Line, already under construction, will connect Qingmao Port to Taipa Ferry Terminal when it opens in 2029.

A 30-day public consultation is now underway for the Macau Light Rail Development Strategy Study, led by the Land, Public Works and Transport Bureau (DSSOPT). Proposed expansions include a West Line, a South Line, and an extension to the existing East Line. If approved, the South Line would serve major casinos such as Wynn, MGM Macau, StarWorld, and Sands Macau. The final decision on the extensions rests with the Macau SAR Government, including the Chief Executive and the Legislative Assembly. Officials hope the new lines will ease congestion and provide better access to popular destinations.

The proposed LRT expansions would mark the system's biggest upgrade since 2019. If approved, the new routes could reduce bus and shuttle dependency while improving transport for residents and tourists. The government will review public feedback before moving forward with the plans.
