Lyft and Uber Eats expand women-only ride services across German cities
Women can now choose female drivers in Berlin with Bolt - Lyft and Uber Eats expand women-only ride services across German cities
Ride-hailing services in Germany are expanding options for women seeking female drivers. Lyft has just launched a 'Women for Women' category in Berlin, aiming to improve safety and comfort. Meanwhile, Uber Eats has broadened its own women-only service to more cities after receiving positive feedback from users.
Lyft's new feature allows female passengers to request female drivers exclusively. To use the service, women must first verify their identity by uploading an official ID and a selfie. This one-time check ensures only verified female users can access the category.
Uber Eats introduced a similar service in May, initially available in Berlin, Frankfurt, and Munich. Due to demand, the company has now extended it to Cologne and Düsseldorf. For automatic verification, Uber Eats requires users to select 'female' as their gender in their profile settings.
Both services acknowledge potential delays. Even with more female drivers joining, women-only rides may still take longer to arrange. Uber Eats also grants its female drivers the right to decline passengers if the passenger's gender does not match the expected category.
Lyft plans to introduce the 'Women for Women' option to additional German cities by the end of 2024. The exact number of new locations has not yet been confirmed.
The expansion of women-only ride options reflects growing demand for safer transport choices. Lyft and Uber Eats are both responding by increasing availability in major cities. Passengers can expect more locations to follow as the services develop further.
