LPG cylinder prices surge by ₹29, sparking political backlash and economic concerns

The price of a 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder has risen by ₹29 across major cities. In Delhi, the cost jumped from ₹913 to ₹942, while Mumbai saw an increase from ₹912.50 to ₹941.50. Political leaders have reacted sharply to the latest hike, with criticism and justifications emerging from different quarters. The price adjustment was met with strong opposition from NCP chief Sharad Pawar. He called the increase an added burden on households already grappling with soaring living expenses. Pawar directed his criticism at the Central Government, questioning the timing of the move amid ongoing economic pressures.

Defending the decision, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis pointed to global factors. He cited geopolitical tensions and war-like conditions as key drivers behind rising fuel costs worldwide. Fadnavis also noted that India’s fuel pricing has long mirrored international trends, leaving little room for domestic insulation from such spikes. Market analysts have cautioned that further LPG price rises may be unavoidable if global energy prices stay high. Public sector oil companies, meanwhile, continue to face losses of around ₹703 on every domestic LPG cylinder sold. These financial strains add to concerns over persistent inflation, as both fuel and food prices remain elevated.

The latest LPG price increase has intensified debates over inflation and economic relief. With oil marketing companies still operating at a loss, future adjustments may depend on global market movements. Consumers now face higher costs, while policymakers weigh responses to ongoing financial challenges.
