Lena Bridge construction begins with first cofferdam deployment in 2024

Preparations are now underway to position the first cofferdam in the Lena River as part of the Lena Bridge construction. Originally, two cofferdams were set to be installed this year, but plans have since changed to just one. Two cofferdams have already been made buoyant and secured temporarily for the operation. The first will be guided into place using tugboats and shore-based pile anchors. Around 20 tug-and-barge vessels will assist in this river operation.

The deployment will take place in two stages, with the final location confirmed by early July. Foundation work is then expected to continue until October. Dredging is also required to ensure the cofferdam sits precisely up to eight metres below the riverbed. The dredger Vitim (Project 1-517-03) has been assigned to this task, supported by a backup dredger on standby.

This year’s navigation period will focus on installing one cofferdam for the construction of Pier No. 10. By the end of 2026, both the cofferdam placement and the pile foundations for the bridge piers must be fully completed. The adjusted plan now involves a single cofferdam installation for 2024, rather than the two originally intended. With dredging, tugboat manoeuvres, and foundation work underway, the project remains on track for its 2026 deadline.
