Leipzig's S-Bahn network expands with more trains and extended routes by 2027

The Leipzig Regional Transport Authority (ZVNL) has approved expanded S-Bahn services for the 2027–2030 timetable. The changes will introduce more frequent trains on key routes, aiming to meet rising demand after the Deutschlandticket's launch. Funding for the upgrades comes from unused budgets following construction delays by DB InfraGO AG. From December 2026, the S2 line will extend beyond Leipzig-Connewitz to Markkleeberg-Gaschwitz. This follows plans to boost capacity on busy routes where passenger numbers have grown.

The S3 line will see two extra round trips between Halle, Schkeuditz, CTL, and Borna. These services will run daily until December 2030. Meanwhile, the S4 route gains six weekday round trips and three on weekends between Torgau and Falkenberg. Two additional S4 services will also connect Taucha to Torgau, while one extra S5 trip will run between Leipzig-Connewitz, CTL, and Halle.

On the S1 line, four new round trips will operate between Leipzig Miltitzer Allee, CTL, and Leipzig-Stötteritz. The ZVNL's action plan includes further upgrades, such as better accessibility and improved bike-and-ride facilities. The expanded services will increase overall capacity across Leipzig's S-Bahn network. While exact passenger growth figures for the S3, S4, and S5 lines remain undisclosed, the changes address higher demand linked to the Deutschlandticket. The upgrades are set to run until at least December 2030.
