Lapu-Lapu City tightens security ahead of high-stakes regional summit
Security preparations for a major regional summit in Lapu-Lapu City have reached full activation. The event, set for May 7 to 8, will bring together foreign delegates for discussions on security, economic cooperation, and policy development. Extensive planning has gone into ensuring safety and operational efficiency during the high-profile gathering. General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., Chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), led a send-off ceremony on May 2, 2026, at the Mactan Shrine in Lapu-Lapu City. The ceremony marked the deployment of police personnel assigned to secure the summit. Prior to this, Nartatez conducted an aerial inspection of key areas in Central Visayas to assess readiness and confirm deployment strategies.
The Task Group Central Visayas, a multi-agency unit, has been activated to oversee security operations. Their responsibilities include site and convoy protection, coastal and airspace monitoring, traffic control, emergency medical services, and rapid incident response. Deployment levels have been adjusted to meet operational demands, ensuring continuous coverage throughout the event. Foreign delegates are expected to arrive starting May 5, with departures scheduled by May 12. The summit’s security framework draws on best practices from past national and international events, reflecting months of coordination and planning.
The summit will proceed under heightened security measures, with agencies working together to maintain safety. Discussions among delegates will centre on regional security, economic partnerships, and policy initiatives. The event marks one of the largest coordinated security operations in the region this year.
