The Lagos State Government will close the outbound section of Eko Bridge from Tuesday for urgent repairs. The shutdown follows ongoing safety concerns and aims to assess structural damage before rehabilitation begins. Motorists travelling from Apongbon towards Ijora Olopa and Lagos Island will need to adjust their routes. Eko Bridge is a vital link between Lagos Mainland and Lagos Island. However, parts of the structure have suffered repeated damage, including fires caused by illegal activities beneath the bridge. In October 2023, repairs required specialised equipment worth around €1.2 million.

This time, Buildwell Construction Company and professional divers will carry out a detailed inspection. Their task is to determine the full extent of the damage. The assessment must be completed within 10 days to allow repairs to start quickly. To manage traffic, personnel and security teams will be stationed along key points. They will guide drivers and help reduce congestion. The government has advised motorists to use the Third Mainland Bridge and other alternative routes during the closure.

The closure affects a major route for thousands of daily commuters. Traffic management measures and alternative routes aim to limit disruption while repairs take place. The government expects the work to improve the bridge’s long-term safety and reliability.
