Kratos Defense stock tumbles 8% after satellite-5G partnership announcement

Kratos Defense revealed a new partnership with SKY Perfect JSAT on 24 March. The announcement aimed to boost the company's position in the satellite and 5G market. Instead, shares fell sharply by 8.29%, closing at $67.22.

The collaboration focuses on developing a ground system for SKY Perfect JSAT's Universal NTN initiative in Asia-Pacific. Kratos will use its OpenSpace software, ensuring compatibility with 3GPP standards for 5G networks. However, the project remains in early validation, with no confirmed contracts or revenue targets.

Analysts linked the stock drop to concerns over unclear financial benefits and Kratos' high price-to-earnings ratio. During trading, shares fluctuated between a 5.5% and 7.5% decline. The stock now sits just above its 200-day moving average of around €67. The deal aligns with Kratos' strategy to expand into commercial satellites while keeping its defence business central. Yet competition is growing, as multiple firms demonstrated similar 5G-satellite tech at the recent Satellite 2026 conference. This suggests a race to set industry standards is underway.

The partnership has yet to outline concrete milestones or financial returns. Kratos' stock performance reflects investor caution over its profitability in the short term. For now, the company continues to balance defence contracts with commercial satellite ambitions.
