Khabarovsk's Sheronova Street tram tracks undergo first full rebuild in 30 years
Major reconstruction work has begun on the tram tracks along Sheronova Street in Khabarovsk. The project, part of the Infrastructure for Life national initiative, will upgrade both the tracks and the road surface. Officials expect the full rebuild to finish by late August. The last full overhaul of the tracks between Volochayevskaya and Lenin streets took place in the mid-1990s. Now, crews are removing the old subgrade entirely and replacing it with a modern base. Outdated wooden sleepers will be swapped for reinforced concrete ones, extending the track’s lifespan and improving its ability to handle heavy loads.
Repairs will follow a staged approach. The first section of the tram line should be completed by June. After that, workers will reinstall switch points and repair adjacent tracks. To keep services running, a reversible tram system has been set up on Sheronova Street, ensuring transport continues on busy routes.
The project also introduces advanced construction techniques. These methods reduce the number of rail joints, allowing for better inspections and smoother operation. As a result, tram wheel sets and tracks will experience less wear, leading to faster, quieter, and more comfortable rides. Once finished, the upgraded tracks will offer improved performance for electric transport. The use of modern materials and reinforced concrete sleepers will enhance durability and reduce maintenance needs. The entire reconstruction is scheduled for completion before the end of August.
