Khabarovsk rolls out AI traffic lights to slash congestion by 2027
Khabarovsk has started installing AI-powered traffic lights across the city. The first three are already operating along Karl Marx Street. The project aims to modernise traffic management and ease congestion. The city plans to launch nine AI traffic lights in 2023 with a budget of 47.4 million rubles. Five more intersections on Karl Marx Street will receive the technology soon. By 2027, Khabarovsk expects to deploy a total of 40 AI-powered traffic lights at a cost of around 150 million rubles.
The systems will be placed along major routes, including Lenin Street and Pionerskaya Street. Dmitry Nechaev, deputy director of the Scientific and Production Center for Traffic Management, stated that the AI helps control the traffic lights. It analyses vehicle and pedestrian patterns to improve flow and reduce delays.
The initiative is part of Russia’s national development program and the federal Infrastructure for Life scheme. Regional authorities believe the smart lights will enhance safety and efficiency on the roads. The AI traffic lights are designed to optimise traffic movement and cut congestion. The project forms part of a wider effort to upgrade urban infrastructure. More intersections will adopt the system in the coming years.
