Khabarovsk man loses $8,500 in fake parking space scam
A resident of Khabarovsk lost 780,000 rubles (around $8,500) in a fraudulent parking space deal. The scam involved a seller with a criminal history who had no legal right to the property. Authorities have since taken action against the suspect, recovering part of the stolen funds.
The victim was tricked into transferring a down payment of 780,000 rubles to the seller’s daughter’s bank card. The parking space, however, had already been seized due to the seller’s unpaid debts, making the sale illegal.
During the investigation, the suspect returned 150,000 rubles ($1,600) to the victim. Authorities later detained the individual in Vladivostok and brought them to Khabarovsk. The suspect, who had prior convictions for embezzlement and unpaid child support, now faces travel restrictions and strict conduct requirements. A criminal case was opened under fraud charges (Part 3, Article 159 of the Russian Criminal Code). Under recent regulations, banks and telecom operators will also be required to compensate victims of such scams.
The suspect remains under investigation, with partial funds already recovered. New rules now hold financial institutions and telecom companies accountable for reimbursing fraud victims. The case highlights the risks of property transactions involving sellers with unresolved legal issues.
