A major crackdown on illegal fishing has taken place in Atyrau Region. Operation Bekire-2026 targeted poaching and the unlawful trade of fish products. Authorities have seized over four tons of contraband, including rare sturgeon and caviar. The operation uncovered 152 violations related to fishing, storage, transport, and sales. Officers confiscated 19 illegal fishing tools and 10 watercraft used for unlawful activities. Among the seized goods were 911 kilograms of sturgeon and one kilogram of sturgeon caviar.
All confiscated fish products have been handed over to the Ural-Atyrau Sturgeon Fish Farm. Seven criminal cases are now under pretrial investigation as a result of the operation. Alongside enforcement, authorities are engaging with local communities. Preventive outreach and educational sessions are being held with residents and fisheries representatives. The goal is to raise awareness and encourage reporting of illegal activities.
The operation has disrupted illegal fishing networks in the region. Authorities continue to urge the public to report suspicious activities to law enforcement. The confiscated equipment and fish products will support ongoing conservation efforts.
